Murder by Decree – Holmes

On this date in 1979, Murder by Decree opened in the United States. It had premiered in Canada on February 1. Christopher Plummer starred as a kinder Sherlock Holmes tracking down Jack the Ripper.

The film used the ‘Royal Conspiracy’ theory, which was in vogue at the time. James Mason was a step away from Nigel Bruce and towards the actual Watson written by Doyle. Frank Finlay, who passed away just this past January 30, played Inspector Lestrade.

I enjoy Plummer’s performance (his second as the Great Detective) and you can read my post about the film over at Black Gate
